A while ago I read Beyonce's "Eat Play Love" article. I was surprised at how open the usually private triple threat was about her upbringing and her life in general. She spoke about the woman who inspired her to be a strong and focused black woman; her mother. I can attest to that because i grew up watching my mom go about her daily duties while raising eight kids. She spoke about Destiny's Child's struggles to make it in the music industries and how hard she has worked to maintain her status in the business.
The long descriptive article seemed more like a journal entry to me than anything else, which explains my surprise when I found out that Beyonce was being awarded a journalism award by the New York Association of Black Journalists. I'm sure that almost every journalist, blogger...etc's jaws dropped when they first heard the news. I do not think Beyonce is skilled enough to receive an award for her journal entry in Essence magazine. I found a very interesting and truthful article by Dr. Boyce Watkins i thought I should share with all my readers. Dr. Watkins excellently criticized the NYABJ for they're ill fated choice.
